Gola Fizzlers

Posted by SMM on 12:58
I looove sizzlers. I have had sizzlers in most of the major Indian cities. When my office moved to Defence Colony, everyone told me that I just had to have the sizzlers at Gola, which is pretty well known and cunted amongst the top 3 in Delhi for sizzlers.
Well Arjun and me decided to celebrate Christmas eve by having dinner at Gola Sizzlers. Bad idea. Very bad idea. Waste of complete time, energy and money. To begin with the place was dingy, and was in desperate need of better lighting and music. They were playing instrumental throughout and on the other hand, I could hear 'Singh is King' blaring from the television. Bright lighting very much needed, especially in a place where the seating is such that if diners on adjacent tables are eating at the same time, elbows would definitely clash. I lost interest the moment I walked in and wanted to leave, but Arjun was of the opinion that maybe we should try the food. The captain was rude and least interested in anything except his tip. When we asked him for a table he showed us to a small corner table in one end of the room. Considering the fact that the place was practically empty (which should have probably tipped us off), we could have been shown way better seats. When we were finally seated, we perused the menu. Ordered for drinks and we decided to skip the appetizers and move directly to main course. We had to ask him a query about one of the dishes twice, till we were finally told that he had no idea. Undeterred we still placed our orders. Ughhhhhhhh the food was soooooooooo bad.
How can anyone mess up a sizzler? Gola could well give you some tips. Well you lather a boiled piece of the slimmest chicken breast ever with lots of bland weird sauce (which for some reason shall taste like a watered down version of the usual bhuna masala made with onions & tomato) and you pass it off as mushroom sauce, and sprinkle a couple of mushrooms around for effect. Let the diner hunt for the chicken. Along with that you serve some burnt garlic bread and a solid piece of butter which if cut, will probably go plop into the neighbouring diner's plate. You also serve precisely 5 piece of 5 different veggies - all wilted & most uninteresting looking. You plonk it in front of the diner like your doing him a favour and give him some dirty knives to eat with.
Well, I obviously left most of it uneaten. Arjun was a brave soldier and ate what he had ordered after liberally dosuing it with tobasco sauce. Then I asked for the feedback form. Immediately the waiter wanted to know if there had been deficiency in service, I replied that there had been major deficiency in food. He took it t the captain who tried to tell me that continental food is supposed to be bland. Well I know it is bland, but is it also absolutely tasteless? Anyway he very happily told me this is what they serve and this is what people eat here.
So people if you do go to Gola Sizzlers, Defence Colony, it is solely at your own risk, and then don't say I didn't warn you.

PS: Don;t forget to carry elbow pads.

Suggestion taken........

It's one hell of a title, u have for this blog. I'm impressed.

the sizzlers turned out to be fizzlers.... but the walnut cake from the Defence bakery alleviated SMMs mood somewhat.....

Ria...I ahve no idea either how this place became so famous. It sucks

hey Cess...how was home? Don't worry when your in Delhi, we'l take you to a really good plc :)

Hpe you had a great time at Christmas too and Happy New Year :)

Hey Razigan, welcome to my blog and thanks :)

Arjun,, the slice of Chocolate fudge - walnut pie sure did help

Hi,

Just read your post about your experience to Gola Sizzlers.
Just to inform you, Nirulas has an ongoing sizzler festival at its potpourri restaurant till febraury. You must try the sizzlers there, as they are inexpensive and sizzlingly tasty.
For more information on the sizzler festival go to www.nirulas.com

Enjoy your meal!!

Hey thanks for the tip Kanika...will have to go to Potpouri soon

I've eaten at Gola but I don't think its that bad.I mean they do have a very weird choice of sizzlers.I mean they turn Indian food into sizzlers too which doesn't do any good to either the sizzler or the Indian food.
Maybe you had something which was actually awful because of what I've ordered from there its pretty okish.Nothing extraordinary which would make me go there often.
If you do go there again(brave soldier you would be then!lol) then try their chocolate brownie sizzler.I mean its a must have for all chocaholics. And I think you are one of them(or one of US! :D)

P.S.A very interesting blog "title".Really witty.

Hey Tarun...welcome to my blog and thanks :)

I have no plans whatsoever of venturing back to that godforsaken place. Maybe their food was extra bad because of it being Christmas eve or what I don't know, but it was really really bad and a complete waste of time and money.I love sizzlers ad I have had them in many places, but never as bad i was there.

I wonder how it was that empty on Christmas eve too.Anyway I've not been there in long so wouldn't know if their quality of food has deteriorated also. The lighting is indeed very dim.More of a club kinda lighting rather than a restaurant!

I would recommend you try Picadelli in CP then,if you haven't been there before I mean.Or United India coffee house in CP again.

P.S.My name is Tanuj and NOT Tarun :p

TANUJ: A BIIIIIIIG SORRRRY TO YOU FIRSTLY FOR CALLING YOU TARUN

(kaan pakadke maafi maangi)

And ya a few others have told me about Picadilly and Moets also. Let's see. Right now all thanks to Gola, I'm a little off sizzlers. And they desperately need better lighting. They'r not suited for a romantic dinner for 2 or a club - they don't need such dim lighting. or maybe they'r saving costs :P

Lol you didn't have to apologise itna zyada also.lol.

Yeah Moets is good too.But Picadilly has a bit of every cuisine.Moets has Indian,Continental but both are seperate restaurants. So Picadilly would have a big choice list.

Tanuj...frankly I want to have good sizzlers. Had good Indian/ Chinese/ Continental etc elsewhere but I'v not yet had good sizzlers in my (almost) 2 years in Delhi

Then Moets would be a great choice or United India Coffee house.Go with Moets actually, tried and tested.

Well Tanuj, I was told that even Gola was tried and etsted. I am a bit wary now, though I do like Moet's Indian & Continental

Nah give Moets a go.What's there to lose?
(Except having the search for good sizzlers in Delhi to continue.. :p)

Tanuj, that's a good point. I just might deign to bestow Mort with my presence :P

Lol good. They would try their best to make a foodie finally get what she wants!

Fingers crossed Tanuj...I'm hoping my quest will finally end

Lol I hope it shall.I think it would.Hey valentines day in 10days time, make your husband take you out for dinner. Some days guys can't refuse and Valentines Day is one of them.lol.

Tanuj - not a bad idea at all my friend :)
