Harry Bellafonte vs. Linkin Park

Posted by SMM on 19:03
Caveat: This is a meandering post where I know not what I have written cuz the words just flew from my heart.
From an early age I learn to keep my emotions hidden and not give others any hook by which they could scoop me up. Children are sometimes very mean and cruel, without probably meaning to, and I experienced this young. This was probably because of my dad's ill health which had already started showing up. First, he started limping, then he started using a walking stick (which for a serving defence officer is a big blow to his ego), then he had o take premature medical retirement, he moved to a wheelchair, and now depending on his health, either he is bed-ridden or on a wheelchair.
Unfortunately, I also have a thin skin. To survive the cruel barbs of many, I pretended that I had a thick skin and laughed away many barbs, and believing offense to be the best defence, I made quite a few barbs myself. Not something that I am proud of. This also led to my developing a pretty sharp tongue which I have now learnt to tone down. I have learnt to swallow angry words sometimes, since a word from me when angry and reckless would  probably lead to WW III.
As a child, I was never one of the most popular ones or the cutest ones. I learnt to take it in my stride. I tried hard to be what they were and fit in, but I stuck out like a square peg in a round hole (to use a cliche). I made some wonderful friends in school and college who gave me the confidence to be what I am and we were a bundle of squares, rounds, triangles, rectangles, pentagons and other wonderful shapes and we gave a damn about what was the shape of the hole (no pun intended - just keeping in line with the cliche) cuz we learned to make our own , and not what anybody else wanted to perceive me as. Today, other than my friends, my husband gives me that confidence.
Unfortunately, it is tough to come across such people in today's world - the drummers who march to their own tune (I seem to be into cliches today). Alot of people claim to be such a person, but very few actually are. Its tough to say I prefer Harry Bellafonte when the whole world swears by Linkin Park.

aaaaah... why did u have to say linkin park :(

say.. umm... harry belafonte and enrique :P

but hey... ur the sweetest sis ever.. and nothing anyone says will change it.

huggs :)

oh well, I like Casablanca more than Terminator!! And I like Patty Paige's Tennessee waltz more than One step closer!! On a quiet, pleasant, moonlit night, you would wanna play/sing the banana boat song than breaking my habit, right??

I love this post. expressed so well and the cliches, very well woven. i ask people if they are having fun from all the meanest when they barb. this so far has worked and they just shut up.

we build walls around us when we feel threatened. the most natural defence is offence. you are lovely and any sharp remarks are well meant and true from your heart.

@ Aditya

Oh thanku...you the sweetest bro too. Hugzzzzzz

Harry Bellafonte vs. Enrique
Harry bellafonte vs. Linkin Park
Abba vs. Bollywood

It's all just a metaphor :)

Hey Sumit...welcome to my blog and thanks for commenting.I do like Casablanca but I also enjoy Terminator.

My point (in this post)which probably did nto come out too well, is that very few people will genuinely admit to it. Most peopel will say they prefer Terminator only cuz that's he more popular answer to say, or some just to stand out will sya Casablanca, but very few actually say what they want to say. They say what they think you want to hear

Any background to this post?Anything happened recently? I mean just wondering :-)
I feel there will be a sequel to this post! :-)Sorry if I am being presumptious.

Hey A..you'd probably have to ask me too then sometime or the other. I try hard to control my tongue but old habits die hard

Thanks for the voe of confidence Rach :)

Hey Lostie...nope your not being presumptuous at all...just a whole host of things building up and building up and me finally realizing that it was juvenile to go down to their level. It is juvenile - its what we did in school, not something which I at least would do now

Harry belafonte! Your title was good enough to prompt me to comment! hehe. Have you heard his song 'There's a hole in the bucket'? Such a clever song!

Btw, first time commenting here!
Soo hiiiiii. :)

Adding HB in my list of artists to listen to.

I'll always be around....come hell or high water.

big hairy hug!!
(you'll push me away in 2 mins or less - saying it's too hot)

Had to read the post with harry belafonte in it :)! But jokes aside, I know what you mean. I was a tall pole too who couldnt fit into the smaller squares around. But as you said to find the other unique shapes to be your friends, gave me an enriching experience, which helps me stand tall even today

Gosh, u sound exactly like me! I love harry belafonte too. And I was never a 'popular gal'..just an 'ordinary girl'. Sometimes, I am so glad for it, because this way, we make friends with the best people in town..the ones with a heart of real gold!! Keep writing, SMM! And the link to your linkedin page was really cool :-)

I guess ppl become mean when they themselves cant find anything 'nice' in them. It's a defense mechanism. A survival trait.

I like this post SMM :)

Keshi.

Hey medha...'There's a hole in my bucket' is one of my favourite funny songs.

And thanks for dropping by and commenting. Btw do you blog? Coulnd't find your link

J...Harry Bellafonte is definitely worth it

Arjun, it is hot and your hair is getting into my neck and I'l get a heat rash :P

Hey Anu...you got the true essence of my post. Thanks. We all have to learn to stand tall sometime irerspective of those around us - but that takes alot of courage especially when one is under alot of peer pressure, like in school or college

Hey Pallavi...your so right. By not pretending to be someone else we meet people like us and those with whom we can gel...and they are our true friends :)

Hey Keshi....a sharp tongue is a result of a defence mechanism, but not something which I am proud of, but something I developed out of necessity.

Thanks for the compliment of liking my post Keshi :)
